This is the door the poor souls passed through as they left Elminia and Africa for the last time and stepped on ships that would take them to places around the world. The six months that it would take for the ships to reach their destinations were horrific. Chained in the belly of a ship, not able to move, raped, beaten, laying in their own waste, listening to the crys of others whose language they did not understand. Women giving birth to babies while being chained. This was the unspeakable journey my ancestors made as they were forced into chattle slavery and forever cut off from their rich African heritage.
